1911 Census - Wathamstow, Essex

By 1911, Sarah (Hammond) Green's daughter, Kate, is married to John Aylett and they have three children. Also living with them is Kate's brother, John Green, and their cousin, Daisy Huard. Charlotte Matilda is deceased by this time and it seems that Sarah Green might also be deceased.

1798 Land Tax - Waltham (Abbey), Essex

This beautiful document lists our ancestor, William Hammond, in the top left area of the left page. He is renting from Joseph Hoy and the columns to the right give the amount of tax.. We have had this information for sometime, but this is the first time I have seen the original document. There are also several Littlers shown on the two pages. (Ancestry.com)

The banner photo above, courtesy of the Latham Timber firm, is an aerial view of Hammond Cottages (and other cottages) looking south along the west bank of the Lea River at Upper Clapton, Hackney which is a borough of Greater London. The cottages were cleared early in the 20th century when the Latham Timber Company put up lumber sheds; however, a public house called 'The Kingshead' (the large building in bright light in the left foreground) lasted until the 21st century. Finally, the area was developed in the first decade of the 21st century, and there is no longer any remnant of the little community which was along the Lea River north of the Lea Road from 1832 when John Hammond first leased the land from Lord Amherst for a period of about 75 years........

INTRODUCTION

This blog is dedicated to the family history of John, William and Alfred Hammond who were sent to Canada in September of 1880 through the Annie Macpherson society, and to their siblings, Mae and George, with whom they were reunited after the turn of the century. Their parents had both died in their early thirties and their Grandmother Hammond gave permission for the three older boys to emigrate from England. Mae was in the care of a maternal relative, and the youngest child, George, was with paternal relatives. Mae and George grew up in the London area and immigrated to Canada as adults after the turn of the century. This is the family history of these five siblings who were born at Lea Bridge, Hackney in north-east London.
